CHAPTER 21

Storming into a room and demanding that Mephisto not prevent me from participating in magic that could possibly kill me was several layers of absurdity and easily the stupidest thing ever. I recognized it for what it was but was unable to rein in my pride and staunch my sense of autonomy. My life was spiraling out of control and I was clinging hard to anything that made me feel like I had a hold of it. Despite how ludicrous it was. And that was where I was. Grasping for some semblance of control over my decisions, my memories, my past, my magical ability, my identity in the supernatural world, and even how I chose to protect myself.

Mephisto was in his office, looking through the floor-to-ceiling window. Slowly and deliberately, he turned to face me. After giving me a long look, he chuckled and moved slowly toward me. “I often wonder if you are just needlessly defiant and uniquely rambunctious,” he mused aloud.

Neither. They don’t sound like compliments?

“Woven spells, no matter how talented the weaver, are never precise. Those that deal in death are even more unstable. Risky. I don’t wish to return to the Veil at the sacrifice of your life,” he explained.

He was right and I knew it. I nodded, feeling foolish for thinking for even one minute that this was a battle to take on when there were far more important things I needed to address. He continued to study me, seemingly looking for something. Unsated curiosity lingered in his eyes and expression. I knew he was wondering how I took the information about the shifters. I wasn’t sure, either.

When he leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to my lips, I returned it and the tension in the kiss melted away.

“I need to speak to Dareus about the Black Crest grimoire,” I said.

“Erin.”

I closed my eyes, not ready for the debate.

“You already know the requirement.”

“I’m not killing Harrison for it”—I pulled my head back and looked at the determination in his eyes—“and nor will you.”

I wasn’t going to kill for it, so I’d have to outsmart the demon. Demons were known for their trickery. The question was, how did I out-trick a trickster?

Maybe I wouldn’t have to.
